Because it was J’s birthday, he wanted to embark on a food trip/road trip in QC, a domain we don’t frequent because we are south people. His officemates have been raving about Chicken Charlie so he wanted to try it. Off we went with R and T to Banawe (with the help of Google maps and a quick call to someone, of course), in search of this delicious chicken.
Chicken Charlie is located at 592a N.S. Amoranto St. cor. Banawe St., Quezon City. The place is small, with a very few tables and chairs inside. We had to wait for a few minutes before we were able to get a table. We ordered:
Fries are always a welcome appetizer. Good thing they arrived fast enough since you have to wait 15-20 minutes for the chicken. They taste okay, and seem to be young potatoes cut into quarters with the skin on. Then came the drinks:
Overpriced, ‘no? But I like it. It doesn’t really have a strong ginger taste. And I’m not sure if it has alcohol content.
I like this too. You know those canned peaches with syrup? That’s how it tastes like.
Finally, the chicken arrived. We got the 4 + 4 Combo, 4 Drumsticks and 4 Wings.
Half of it was with the soy garlic sauce and the other half was with hot sweet sauce (the ones with the toothpick). I like the hot sweet sauce better though it’s not really that hot. The soy garlic was rather bland. I couldn’t taste the garlic. But overall, I was disappointed. I think the only good thing about it is the super crispy skin with the sauce. Though I still think that the sauce was rather “bitin”. The chicken meat was dry and devoid of any flavor. I read about this on Anton‘s blog and he was raving about this chicken. I trust his taste but this just fell short of my expectations. We were speechless after a few bites, not knowing what to comment.
BTW, here’s a picture of their full menu:
If you noticed, the combos were supposed to be “served with a side of pickled radish” but none came. So that’s another minus point.
But I still encourage you to try it. We have different taste buds after all. And who knows, maybe their cook was just having an off day at the time of our visit.
